Legendary Actress Saroja Devi Passes Away At 87; Film Fraternity Pays Tributes

Saroja Devi passed away early Monday morning in Bengaluru.

Veteran actress B Saroja Devi, known as one of Indian cinema’s first female superstars, passed away due to age-related ailments on Monday morning (July 14) at her Bengaluru residence. She was 87. The much-loved actress was often referred to as Kannadathu Paingili’ (Pretty Kannada parrot) by her fans.

Saroja Devi predominantly featured in Kannada cinema but was also considered a top actress in the Tamil and Telugu film industries. She began her career at the age of 17 with the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955).

During her career, she has acted opposite several superstars across industries such as Rajkumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, MGR, and NT Rama Rao, and holds the unique record of having acted in lead roles in as many as 161 consecutive films between 1955 and 1984. 

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. In 2008, she was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Government of India, as part of the celebrations of India's 60th Independence Day. Devi was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the State Governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

In 2010, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan also instituted the Padma Bhushan B. Saroja Devi National Award, a lifetime achievement award to honour artists in the performing arts. The recipients have so far included K. J. Yesudas, Vyjayantimala, Anjali Devi, Ambareesh and more.

In terms of acting, she was most last seen in a cameo role in Puneeth Rajkumar's 2019 film Natasaarvabhowma. In Tamil, she was last seen in Suriya and Nayanthara’s film Aadhavan (2009), directed by KS Ravikumar. 

In 2021, actor Regina Cassandra played Saroja Devi in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual Thalaivi, starring Kangana Ranaut. It was directed by Vijay. 

Paying his tribute, Rajinikanth wrote on his X handle, “The great actress Saroja Devi, who won the hearts of millions of fans, is no longer with us. May her soul rest in peace.”

Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar also posted, “#SarojaDevi amma was the greatest of all times. No other female actor in south has ever enjoyed the name and fame as her. Such a lovable adorable soul she was. Had a great rapport with her. My trip to Bengaluru was incomplete without meeting her. And whenever in chennai, she would call. Will miss her immensely."
