The director had recently revealed recently that his next movie after 'Manjummel Boys' would not feature a 'star actor'
Director Chidambaram’s next, following his blockbuster Malayalam film Manjummel Boys of last year, will be a film titled Balan. The filmmaker had revealed earlier that the film would have limited characters and a humble setting. It is being written by Jithu Madhavan, the writer-director of last year’s blockbuster Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil.
The film’s production revealed the posters of the film with the title announcement. Speaking to Cue Studio, the director said he wanted to “avoid prejudice” for his characters that came with known faces. He also added that his films would mostly have new actors and that he wanted to avoid the predictability that came with casting familiar actors. He noted that the film did not demand big stars, joking that he was able to predict the “modus operandi of certain characters based just on the casting decisions.”
KVN Productions, led by Venkat K Narayana, has partnered with Thespian Films, headed by Shailaja Desai Fenn, for this new film. The production has enlisted top-tier talent, including Shyju Khalid as director of photography, Sushin Shyam as music director, and Vivek Harshan as editor.
The film is part of a broader 2025 slate for KVN Productions, which includes projects like KD (Kannada), Toxic featuring Yash, Jana Nayagan (Tamil) featuring Tamil star Vijay, and a Hindi thriller by Priyadarshan. The Malayalam venture marks another step in KVN’s expansion into diverse regional cinema.
Incidentally, Balan was the name of Malayalam cinema’s first “sound film”, and it released in 1938. It was also the third feature film in Malayalam cinema after Vigathakumaran (1928) and Marthanda Varma (1933). Based on the short story 'Vidhiyum Mrs. Nayarum' by A. Sundaram, the 1938 film was a melodrama about the struggle of two orphaned children. The full title of the new film is Balan: The Boy, and is expected to be released later this year.
