After winning a hard-fought election last week, Malayalam actor Shwetha Menon has emerged as the winner, becoming the first female president of the A.M.M.A or the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes, beating actor Devan to win this post. She will be supported by fellow actress Kukku Parameswaran, who also became the first woman to win the post of General Secretary. Meanwhile, Ansiba Hassan has returned to her position in the Executive Committee. Other important positions in the leadership were handled by Jayan Cherthala and Lakshmi Priya, who were elected vice presidents, and Unni Shivpal, who was appointed treasurer.

Members of the A.M.M.A. had been vocal about a change of guard at the top to tackle the association’s decline following serious allegations after the Hema Committee report was tabled late last year. Actor Jagadeesh, who was among the contenders for the post of president, volunteered to step back, voicing the need for a female president. Similarly, actor Baburaj too decided to step away from the elections this year after a section within the association objected to his participation while #MeToo allegations were being made against him.

Just last week, controversy erupted when a case was filed against Shwetha Menon. She was booked for sexually explicit content in her films. The case was filed days before Menon was to contest for the post of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), a post previously held by superstar Mohanlal. The complaint against her was filed by social activist and Ernakulam native Martin Menachery. Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act) deals with punishment for publishing material containing sexually explicit acts in electronic form.

Several actors from the Malayalam film industry condemned the complaint against Menon, hinting at a political conspiracy. Veteran actor Devan, also in the running for the post of AMMA president, called the complaint “nonsense and filed with an ulterior motive."
