Bobby Deol cuts a haunting figure in the gritty and grimy first-look from Anurag Kashyap's upcoming film Bandar, set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Intriguingly described as ‘the story that should have never been told’, and bearing the English title ‘Monkey in a Cage’. Bandar appears to be an incarceration drama, with Deol hunched in a squalid jail cell amidst sleeping inmates, a look of simmering desperation on his stricken face.

Inspired by true events, Bandar is written Sudip Sharma, known for creating the darkly captivating web shows Paatal Lok and Kohrra. Alongside Deol, Sanya Malhotra will also feature in the film’s cast. Deol and Malhotra worked together in the 2022 thriller Love Hostel.

“The Story that should not have been told... But is the Official Selection at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival 2025. Our Film inspired by True Events is Premiering at #tiff50 #Bandar #MonkeyinaCage,” Deol wrote on Instagram, sharing his first look from the film.

Bandar, produced by Nikhil Dwivedi, will be screened as part of TIFF's Special Presentations programme, which celebrates contemporary cinema from across the globe. The festival will run from September 4 to 14.

Following his comeback with 2020’s Class of 83, Bobby Deol has been on a hot streak, with notable turns in Animal and Kanguva. He featured more recently in Daaku Maharaaj and Housefull 5.

Known for his rigorous and uncompromising filmmaking style, Kashyap, in a recent podcast, praised Deol’s commitment during the shoot of Bandar, emphasising that the actor’s performance will be vastly different from the one in Animal. "I recently made a film with Bobby Deol. He's my age but he totally worked like a newcomer. He has done something fantastic that I am dying to show to the world," Kashyap said in an interview with The Juggernaut.

Earlier reports claimed Malayalam actor Joju George is also a part of Bandar, as is Saba Azad. India is set to make a strong showing at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Besides Bandar, Neeraj Ghaywan's Cannes-feted Homebound and the 50th anniversary restoration of Sholay will have gala screenings at TIFF.
