Among the titles competing for top honours are new films by acclaimed auteurs like Wes Anderson (The Phoenician Scheme), Richard Linklater (Nouvelle Vague), Ari Aster (Eddington), Julia Ducournau (Alpha), and Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind). Six women helm entries in the main competition this year, including Hafsia Herzi, Chie Hayakawa, Carla Simon, and rising German director Mascha Schilinski with the intriguingly titled Sound of Falling.

Tom Cruise returns to the Croisette with Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, premiering out of competition, three years after Top Gun: Maverick dazzled Cannes. With a record 2,909 films submitted, Frémaux hinted that additional titles may still be slotted across categories, a growing trend in recent years.

Cannes 2025 opens on May 13 with Amélie Bonnin’s Leave One Day, kicking off what looks to be a star-studded and artistically rich edition — one that marks a return to form after several pandemic-affected years and industry strikes.
