Kokob Gebrehaweria Tesfay’s student film A Doll Made Up of Clay is getting a debut this week. The film is one of 16 films chosen out of 2,700 entries at La Cinef, an official selection, which highlights films from film schools, at the Cannes Film Festival. The filmmaker, who made this film along with his junior in college, Sahil Manoj Ingle, is ecstatic.

The film, starring Ibrahim Ahmed and Geeta Doshi, revolves around a Nigerian footballer who moves to Kolkata after selling his land in his country, but then, a devastating injury changes his life. Tesfay reveals in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India that the film is based on Ahmed’s life. The filmmaker’s journey with Ahmed began as a film exercise for his college, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata.

“I was walking alone in Calcutta during Durga Pooja when I saw him (Ahmed). He had never acted before, but he was a football player. So I requested him to act for my long-take exercise. And then one day, he told me to look at a scar on his hand. He said, 'Kokob, this is my life.' I took my camera out and started shooting him; I then decided to film something as a documentary.”

The film was shot as part of SRFTI’s zero-budget initiative, informs Ingle. “We won’t get any money from the institute, but we get the resources from them to shoot a film,” he says, adding that the film crew pooled together money for food and petrol. “It has been a good journey for me to understand everything from script development to permissions involved for shooting,” the young producer says.

The duo are looking forward to watching good films and connecting with new people at the festival. “I never imagined this would happen. As a producer, I know what it means to be here at this age and come to Cannes,” Ingle adds with a smile.
