Shah's comedic breakthrough came as Commissioner D’Mello in the cult comedy 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro' (1983), directed by Kundan Shah.
Veteran actor Satish Shah, who played several iconic roles in film and television, from the broadly comic to the quietly twisted, passed away from kidney-related complications in Mumbai on October 25. He was 74.
According to reports, Shah was admitted to Hinduja Hospital in Mahim following kidney failure and passed away around 2.30 pm. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday, October 26.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Shah played small but memorable roles in Parallel Cinema films like Gaman, Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, Umrao Jaan and Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai. His comic breakthrough came as Commissioner D’Mello in the cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), directed by Kundan Shah. One of the most delirious sequences in the film has D'Mello's coffin travelling around a nocturnal Mumbai — the paragon of a 'deadpan' performance.
Around the same time, Kundan Shah cast him as a regular in the hit sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, appearing as a new character in every episode. He played 55 different characters across 55 episodes. Shah also gained acclaim for his roles in Filmy Chakkar (1995) and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004), both opposite Ratna Pathak Shah. His character in the latter, Indravadan Sarabhai, a mischievous, sarcastic patriarch married to Pathak Shah’s Maya Sarabhai, was a huge draw on TV in the 2000s.
Shah also appeared in many mainstream films including Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Ishq Vishk, Om Shanti Om and others and guested on comedy shows.
Shah was a passionate test cricketer in his youth and a feature of Mumbai's cultural scene. He was married to designer Madhu Shah.
In 2023, Shah made headlines when he tweeted about receiving a racist comment at Heathrow Airport in the UK. "I replied with a proud smile “because we are Indians” after I overheard the Heathrow staff wonderingly asking his mate "how can they afford 1st class?”" he shared on Twitter.
