Detective Ujjwalan, which released on Netflix last Friday, has been trending at number five on the OTT platform. It is the second film to release in the Weekend Cinematic Universe and the first since Minnal Murali. Apart from a couple of cameos by actors Pearly Maaney and Srinish, Detective Ujjwalan also ended with an elaborate post credits sequence introducing the folklore of their next film Jambi. Directed by George Kora, it is expected to be one of the first zombie films to be made in Malayalam, along with Arun Chandu’s found footage zombie film Vala.

Speaking about the upcoming films of the universe, one of the two directors of Detective Ujjwalan Indraneel GK (the other director being Rahul G) said, “We are currently completing the writing process of a big scale superhero film which we plan to start shooting next year. It will be the fourth film in the WCU (Weekend Cinematic Universe). But before that, the film will also include few characters from Detective Ujjwalan in Jambi this year. Jambi will also feature a post credits sequence like our film Detective Ujjwalan, and it will announce the next project officially of the WCU.”

Following Jambi and the superhero film from the makers of Detective Ujjwalan, the final instalment of Phase One in the Weekend Cinematic Universe (WCU) is going to an ambitious multi-genre film. “Starting with Jambi, every WCU film will feature cameos, teases, and crossovers—gradually weaving the shared universe together. Phase Two will kick off with Detective Ujjwalan 2, where Ujjwalan takes on a case that’s deadlier than anything he’s faced before,” the director said.

Cedin Paul, the executive producer of Weekend Blockbusters, in earlier interview with THR India, had said, “Minnal Murali, Detective Ujjwalan and our zombie film titled Jambi were all set in small villages, and the three stories take place in the 90s, in adjacent villages. Until then the plan was to think of all three as separate standalone films, but with the overlap, we began considering unifying them. It also made the process fresh and exciting.”

Detective Ujjwalan released to generally positive reviews on 23 May earlier this year.
