The movie’s director Aanand L Rai had reacted earlier about the use of AI to change the ending
On Sunday, actor-director Dhanush issued a statement on his various social media handles, calling out the decision to re-release of his 2013 film Raanjhanaa with an altered climax. The re-release hit screens last Friday with the film ending with Dhanush’s character waking up from his hospital bed. The ending was altered using artificial intelligence and clips of the ending began to flood social media feeds on Friday.
In his letter, Dhanush writes, “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me,” adding, “this alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.”
Speaking to THR India earlier this month, director Aanand L Rai had said, "14 years ago, we had no idea you wouldn't even require actors to alter something like this. Now, you think your machines can create films. Tomorrow, if somebody says that legally, they can alter a film or tamper with it even before it reaches the audience, what will happen? My concern right now is not for me, but for all the filmmakers. I can understand that IP legally belongs to them. They can release; they can make more money out of it. Not a problem. Why tamper?"
The filmmaker says the decision to alter the ending through AI would have still been understandable had the audience rejected the climax of Raanjhanaa, which, is remembered for its powerful finale, where Kundan reflects on being reborn in Varanasi and falling in love with Zoya, again.”
