Actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan says that the team braced for a loss before 'Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra' became a nationwide hit.
In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan opened up about the overwhelming success of Lokah: Chapter 1 — Chandra, a film that has not only resonated with Malayalam audiences but has also broken barriers to become a pan-India cultural phenomenon.
Reflecting on the project, Dulquer admitted the team had modest expectations. “This is our seventh production, and we've always managed to land safe. But nothing has been like Lokah,” he said. “Even as an actor, none of my films have exploded like this. It’s been accepted across demographics and has now become a part of pop culture. That’s what's most exciting.”
Dulquer revealed that the initial projections were far from optimistic. “Honestly, we were bracing ourselves for a potential loss. We believed in the film, but weren’t sure how it would perform commercially,” he shared. “Buyers weren’t lining up, and we had made peace with the idea that we might take a hit on the first film of the franchise.”
But what followed was nothing short of extraordinary. From day one, Lokah began receiving rave reviews from all corners of the country. “I was seeing reactions from across India. It’s a testament to how audiences today are open to different languages and storytelling styles. People gave the film a chance on release day itself—watched it, reviewed it, made reels about it. It was surreal.”
The actor-producer admitted that the magnitude of the film's success took the entire team by surprise. “We were all in disbelief. It just blew up. And suddenly the conversation shifted from ‘will it work?’ to ‘what do we do about the next one?’,” he laughed. “It’s exciting, but yeah—no pressure!”
As Lokah continues to dominate conversations, Dulquer's journey as a risk-taking producer and actor cements his place as one of Indian cinema’s most dynamic forces.
