The Goa Police have registered a medico-legal Unnatural Death (UD) case following the death of veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar on October 8 (Thursday) morning. The case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik is conducting the inquiry, news agency IANs reported.
According to earlier reports, Patekar was brought to Manipal Hospital from his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, where doctors declared him brought dead. The 75-year-old actor reportedly suffered a severe cardiac arrest at his residence.
Patekar was reportedly found unconscious and rushed to the hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him.
Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, told ANI that Patekar could not be revived despite 45 minutes of continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
“Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR, he could not be revived. A medico-legal case (MLC) has been registered, and a post-mortem will be conducted,” Salkar said.
As part of the inquiry, the police will conduct an inquest, arrange a post-mortem examination at Goa Medical College (GMC) and record statements from family members and other relevant persons. The procedures are intended to establish the cause of death and determine the circumstances surrounding it.
It is to be noted that the registration of an unnatural death case is part of the police inquiry and does not, by itself, indicate or establish a crime.
Patekar’s last rites were performed at his farmhouse in Donje village, on the outskirts of Pune, on Thursday night. The actor was cremated with full state honours in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema and theatre. His mortal remains were brought to the venue draped in the Tricolour, and his son, Malhar Patekar, performed the last rites.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the funeral included a 21-gun salute by female police officers, while more than 1,000 people gathered to pay their final respects.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Union ministers Murlidhar Mohol and Ramdas Athawale, actor Jackie Shroff and several other political and film industry figures attended the funeral.
