Filmmaker Payal Kapadia's internationally-acclaimed feature All We Imagine As Light lost out to Jacques Audiard’s bold musical Emilia Pérez (France) at the ongoing Golden Globes 2025 ceremony.
At the 82nd edition of the awards, the film was nominated in two categories: Best Director and Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language.
Kapadia became the first Indian filmmaker to receive a Golden Globes nomination for Best Director for the drama, that was headlined by actors Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha.
In the best director category, Kapadia is still competing with filmmakers like Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, and Edward Berger for Conclave.
In the Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language category, All We Imagine As Light battled with titles like eventual winner Emilia Pérez, The Girl with the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Vermiglio.

All We Imagine As Light has been a festival favourite since May last year, when Kapadia scripted history by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
The film topped every major movie list of last year while also picking up important wins along the way at the Gotham Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, Toronto Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, and Chicago Film Critics Association among others.
All We Imagine As Light is also a strong contender to bag Oscars nominations at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards.
The film, however, was not selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Film category with Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies being the pick, but the comedy-drama failed to make it to the Oscars shortlist.
