'Gossip Girl' star Michelle Trachtenberg Passes Away at 39

Actor Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her performances in shows like Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 39.

She was found in her New York apartment on Wednesday, with authorities confirming that no foul play was suspected. The exact cause of her passing remains under investigation, though reports suggest that she had recently undergone a liver transplant.

Trachtenberg’s career began at the age of three, starring in commercials before landing roles in The Adventures of Pete & Pete and All My Children. Her breakthrough came in 1996 with Harriet the Spy, soon after which she took on the role of Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 2000.

Co-stars James Marsters and Alyson Hannigan recently shared photos with Trachtenberg on Instagram.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of Michelle’s passing. She brought a loving energy to the set of Buffy. My thoughts are with Michelle’s family and friends,” wrote Hannigan.

Beyond television, Trachtenberg starred in a variety of films including EuroTrip, Mysterious Skin, Ice Princess, Six Feet Under and House.

However, one of her most iconic roles came later, as Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl; a character she revisited in the show’s 2022 reboot.

“She was electricity,” wrote co-star Blake Lively on Instagram, along with a photograph of the day she first met Trachtenberg. "She laughed the fullest at someone’s joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself…”

Actor Ed Westwick, who played the role of Chuck Bass on the show also shared a tribute to the actress on social media. While she largely stepped away from the spotlight in recent years, she had one final project in the pipeline — Spyral, a drama about mental illness.
