'Haq' Teaser: Yami Gautam Dhar, Emraan Hashmi's Drama, Inspired by the Shah Bano Case, Books November Release
Directed by Suparn S Varma, 'Haq' is a fictionalised version of events stated in the book titled ‘Bano: Bharat ki Beti’ written by Jigna Vora.
Yami Gautam Dhar is fighting for women's rights in the debut teaser of her upcoming feature, Haq. Directed by Suparn S Varma and also headlined by Emraan Hashmi, the drama is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court judgement on Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case.
Produced by Junglee Pictures, in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, Haq is a fictionalised version of events stated in the book titled ‘Bano: Bharat ki Beti’ written by Jigna Vora, and revisits one of the most controversial cases of the 80s.
The film, which anchors its narrative in a debate between Personal Law v/s Secular Law, is set for a theatrical release on November 7.
Written by Reshu Nath, the teaser of the film showcases Gautam Dhar playing a Muslim woman who goes to court demanding her rights—and that of her children—under Section 125, while Hashmi portrays the role of her husband and a razor-sharp and celebrated lawyer. Haq also stars Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.
The Shah Bano case, officially known as Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, was a landmark Supreme Court case in India that centered on a Muslim woman's right to maintenance after divorce.
In 1978, Shah Bano filed a landmark Supreme Court case seeking maintenance after her husband divorced her via triple talaq and invoked Muslim Personal Law to deny her support. Although she won the right to alimony in 1985, the verdict sparked intense backlash from some Muslim groups.
The Congress government at the time responded by enacting the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, effectively overriding the court's ruling. This move triggered further controversy, with critics labelling it discriminatory and denying Muslim women basic rights available under secular law.
Gautam Dhar was last seen in the Kashmir-set political thriller Article 370, followed by her Netflix comedy, Dhoom Dhaam. Hashmi is currently seen in a special appearance on Aryan Khan's directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
