Actors Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi have finished filming their upcoming feature, inspired by the life of Shah Bano. Billed as a high-octane drama, the untitled film is directed by Suparn S Verma.

The Shah Bano case, officially known as Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, was a landmark Supreme Court case in India that centered on a Muslim woman's right to maintenance after divorce. According to the makers, while Gautam will play a character inspired by Bano, Hashmi will be seen as her husband.

In 1978, Shah Bano filed a landmark Supreme Court case seeking maintenance after her husband divorced her via triple talaq and invoked Muslim Personal Law to deny her support. Although she won the right to alimony in 1985, the verdict sparked intense backlash from some Muslim groups.

The Congress government at the time responded by enacting the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, effectively overriding the court's ruling. This move triggered further controversy, with critics labelling it discriminatory and denying Muslim women basic rights available under secular law.
