The Kerala Police on Tuesday decided that it wouldn't be investigating cases of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour within the Malayalam film industry that emerged from the Hema Committee Report, as they couldn't make any headway. The cops claimed that the probe was dropped as the survivors didn't provide statements in connection with the cases.

According to a report in The Hindu, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) could not gather "sufficient evidence, compounded by the non-cooperation of survivors," despite repeated summons by both the SIT and the court, following which Further Action Dropped (FAD) reports in the 35 criminal cases were filed.

G Poonguzhali, Additional Inspector General of Police and nodal officer for the probe, was quoted as saying that the FAD reports were filed in 21 cases due to a complete lack of progress, while the remaining 14 cases are "likely to be dropped temporarily."

The publication stated that around 40 related complaints were lodged at various police stations after the report was made public, of which 30 cases have reached the chargesheet stage, with prominent names such as Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Siddique, and director Ranjith among those facing legal scrutiny. Proceedings in those cases are ongoing.

Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu took to Instagram and slammed the Kerala government’s handling of the Hema Committee report, which was submitted five years ago.

Thiruvothu tagged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and wrote, "Now can we focus on the actual reason this committee was formed? Putting policies in place to help make regulations in the industry? What is happening with that? No rush, eh? It’s only been five and a half years since the report was submitted."

The Hema Committee, named after Justice K. Hema, was formed in 2019 to investigate the challenges faced by women in the Malayalam film industry, particularly focusing on gender discrimination and sexual harassment. The Kerala government only made the report public on August 19, 2024, and even then, significant portions have been redacted.

The report revealed a widespread culture of exploitation, where women frequently experienced harassment, unequal treatment in a male-dominated space, normalisation of sexual violence, and the absence of robust support systems to protect women, both on and off set.
