With Alappuzha Gymkhana, Khalid Rahman cemented himself as one of the most original cinematic voices in India today. Paired with his brother Jimshi Khalid’s gleefully unhinged cinematography, the duo taped into a new kind of wackiness — chaotic, precise, and entirely their own.

Speaking about his elder brother's influence, Jimshi reflects with deep admiration: "For Shayju Khalid, I wouldn't say cinema was accidental for him. Because in his teenage itself, when he was doing his pre-degrees, he used to assist my elder brother for his pocket money. That was his first step into anything related to the camera—weddings, local photography."

In a time when it was difficult for an outsider family to get into Malayalam films, Shayju Khalid worked as a DOP in the 90s which enabled his younger siblings to get into the line of cinema.

Though Shayju's entry into cinema may have stemmed from circumstance more than a clear pursuit of passion, Jimshi believes it was destiny that led him there. "I don’t know whether he did all that out of passion or his situation then, because Kochi was different in the early and mid-90s. They were trying to pursue a career in cinema at a time when they were nobody. But gradually, he became a cameraman, and he loved it," says Jimshi.

The age gap of over a decade meant Jimshi watched his brother’s journey unfold from a distance. "They worked so hard and for so long, and they had the patience—that influenced me," he says. Additionally, he also credits his brother for influencing his selection of projects, he said, "His [Shayju's] sensibility in selecting a project—that is the influence I personally got from him."
