After directing the Malayalam blockbuster 2018, which became India’s entry to the Oscars, director Jude Anthany Joseph will be directing a film titled MV Kairali, based on the real-life story of the ship MV Kairali, which disappeared in 1979 on its way to Djibouti in East Africa. 51 people, including a woman and her child, disappeared on its final journey.

The screenplay has been written by Jude, American writer James Wright, and Indian writer-journalist Josy Joseph. The film is said to draw from the book based on the ship’s captain, Mariadas Joseph, which was written by his son Lt. Col. Thomas Joseph (retd.)

MV Kairali is said to draw from meticulous research and the event that changed the history of Kerala’s maritime prospects. Apart from the tragedy, the film will also cover the lives of the people (and their families) who disappeared along with the carrier.

In July, THR India had reported that Jude Anthany Joseph will be directing Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut film. In June, Mohanlal took to X to announce, "Dear Mayakutty, may your "Thudakkam" be just the first step in a lifelong love affair with cinema. #Thudakkam Written and Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph and Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Aashirvad Cinemas."

Joseph, who is known for directing popular films such as Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014), Sara's (2021), and 2018 (2023), wrote about this collaboration on Instagram in June.

“I see this as a calling. When my dear Lalettan and Suchichechi entrusted me with their beloved Maya’s debut film, I saw the sheer joy and hope that filled their eyes. I won’t let you down, Lalettan and Chechi. I’m not making any grand claims; this is a small, humble film. I have always made films that speak to my heart, and this one is no different. Antony Chetta, I sincerely hope this marks the ‘beginning’ of an ‘Antony-Jude’ collaboration," the filmmaker wrote.
