The acclaimed magic realist film is getting an India-wide release on September 12.
The trailer for Jugnuma (The Fable), the much-awaited sophomore film of Tithi director Raam Reddy, is here. A magic realism drama set in the hills, the film starring Manoj Bajpayee, Priyanka Bose and Tillotama Shome is releasing in Indian theatres on September 12.
Set in the spring of 1989, and evocatively shot by Sunil Borkar, Jugnuma follows Dev (Bajpayee), a well-to-do man who discovers mysteriously burnt trees in his sprawling estate of fruit orchards nestled in the Himalayas. In spite of all efforts, more fires break out, leading him to see himself and his family for who they truly are. In the breathtaking final shots of the trailer, we see Dev taking flight with a pair of magical wings.
Jugnuma’s trailer was launched on social media by acclaimed Indian directors Vetri Maaran, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Raj B. Shetty and Nag Ashwin. The film is being presented by Anurag Kashyap and Academy Award-winning producer Guneet Monga. With dialogue penned by Varun Grover, the movie also features Deepak Dobriyal.
“For a filmmaker, moments like these feel almost unreal,” Raam Reddy said in a statement. “Having some of the most visionary storytellers of our generation come together in support of Jugnuma is both in humbling and deeply affirming. This film was born out of an intimate journey into magical realism - created from the heart and in a vacuum - and to see it embraced by such giants of Indian cinema makes me believe that cinema really is a dream worth fighting for.”
Reddy’s debut film, the Kannada-language black comedy Thithi (2015), was widely adored, winning the National Film Award for Best Kannada Feature Film.
Jugnuma/The Fable premiered to glowing reviews at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. It won Best Film at Leeds International Film Festival and the Special Jury Prize at the Mami Mumbai Film Festival. The film is being released in Indian cinemas by Flip Films.
