Kajol has never been the kind of actor to look at the film industry with wide-eyed wonder. For her, it was always part of daily life. “Because it has been so much a part of my life, whether it was my grandfather, my dad, my mom, my aunt, my grandmother, it was such a regular part of my life that I was never starstruck by it,” she says in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.

That perspective, she believes, comes from growing up inside the system. “You only join the business if you have a certain amount of madness, if you have a certain amount of passion and a little bit of star-struckness,” she says, smiling. “You need to be a little starstruck with the film industry, where you will forgive them their nonsense and still continue on in the same profession.”

Was she ever that person? “No, I wasn’t,” she says without hesitation, laughing at the question. “I was much more unforgiving earlier. I’m a little more forgiving now.”

“Fortunately for me, I didn’t look at it as nonsense. Most of the stuff that I did, most of the movies that I did, the people that I worked with, it was always the people who made up for everything," she adds.

It is those people, not the projects, that have stayed with her. “Whether it’s Baazigar, till today Abbas Mastan both message me. For every one of my birthdays, my husband’s birthday, my kids’ birthdays, they’re still in touch with me. It was this amazing experience that we had together.”

After more than three decades in front of the camera, Kajol’s relationship with the industry has softened. “Everybody whom I have worked with, even people that I didn’t like then, I like now,” she says with a smile.

On screen, Kajol has maintained a notable presence, returning for The Trial Season 2 and stepping into the talk-show space with Two Much with Kajol and Twinkle. Coming up, she’s slated to headline Maharagni: Queen of Queens, an action thriller alongside Prabhu Deva.
