The makers of Kamalkaval have dropped the darkly intriguing teaser for the Mammootty-starrer. The Malayalam-language film appears to be a gritty crime drama, with Mammootty essaying a mysterious character with negative shades. The acclaimed actor makes a brief but impactful appearance in the teaser, removing his dark glasses and fixing the camera with an icy, intimidating glare, a cigarette coolly perched on his lips. Actor Vinayakan plays his opposite number, setting up a promising showdown.

The film marks the directorial debut of Jithin K. Jose, best known for writing the 2021 period crime thriller Kurup starring Mammootty’s son, Dulquer Salmaan. Jose has co-written the screenplay of Kamalkaval with Jishnu Sreekumar. Mammootty and Vinayakan are joined in the cast by Jibin Gopinath, Meera Jasmine, Rajisha Vijayan and Gayatri Arun. An earlier poster for the film had read, “The venom within.”

Kamalkaval is produced under Mammootty's banner, Mammootty Kampany. Faisal Ali (Shikkari Shambhu, 3 Dots) is the cinematographer, while the music is composed by Mujeeb Majeed. George Sebastian is credited as executive producer.

On directing Mammotty in his debut outing, Jitin Jose had earlier stated that the star approached the role with full enthusiasm. "*Kalamkaval gave him ample scope to explore the layers of emotion, and he approached it with full enthusiasm. Watching him transform into the character on set was a privilege," he told Matrubhumi.

Mammootty, 73, recently experienced a health scare but has recovered from the unspecified issue. He will be seen in Mahesh Narayayan's upcoming film Patriot, co-starring Mohanlal. The film marks the reunion of the Malayalam superstars after a gap of 17 years. Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara and Kunchacko Boban also feature in the multi-starrer currently being filmed in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Mammootty's cult gangster film, Samrajyam, is up for a re-release. Originally released in 1990, the film is making a comeback in 4K Dolby Atmos.
