The crew member allegedly drowned in the Souparnika river in Kollur, Karnataka on May 6.
The filming of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 has reportedly been halted after a member of its crew tragically drowned in a river near Udupi. According to a report by The Hindu, the deceased, 32-year-old MF Kapil, went to the river after his lunch, and got caught in the cross currents of the river. While locals rescued him from the river, he eventually died.
The report also suggested that a case has been registered at the Kollur police station, and that an investigation into the incident is underway. The news comes on the heels of other minor setbacks for the film, including scrutiny from the Karnataka forest officials for alleged environmental damage while filming.
While fans speculated a delay in the film’s release, Hombale Films, the producers of the Kantara universe, denied any news of the delay. “No doubts, No delays,” they posted recently, confirming that the film will be released on October 2 later this year.
The news also prompted a reaction from the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) in Mumbai, which urged the Chief Minister of Karnataka to ensure there's no hush-up involved in the tragedy. The association also appealed to the producers of Kantara to provide financial compensation of ₹1 crore to the family of the deceased crew member.
