The franchise returns—but with a major twist. Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced the title as well as the release date of the new edition of Student Of The Year, headlined by Shanaya Kapoor.
Titled Student Of The Year: After Dark, the film franchise has now turned into a series, directed by Reema Maya, a two-time Sundance Film Festival nominee known for her short films Nocturnal Burger and Counterfeit Kunkoo.
According to the streamer, the franchise will now "boldly" step into an "unexplored, darker territory."
"At the centre of this reinvention is Shanaya, making a digital debut that defies all expectations. Gone is the sparkle of the classic campus queen. In her place stands a fierce, enigmatic figure, stained with blood, eyes burning with secrets, and a storm brewing behind the gates of St. Theresa."
Johar took to Instagram and dropped the teaser of the show on the anniversary of Student Of The Year. The 2012 film was directed by Johar and marked the debut of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra.
"Nostalgia is working overtime this week!!! As we complete 14 years of our beloved SOTY franchise…we embark on a new journey taking it forward but it’s now in AFTER DARK! Gritty, gory, unabashed and absolute madness!!!! Gear up!👊👊👊"
Student Of The Year: After Dark will stream from November 13 on JioHotstar.
The 2012 romantic comedy drama was a departure for Johar, who was coming to helm the film after biggies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name is Khan.
The second installment of Student Of The Year was directed by Punit Malhotra and starred Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Panday, and Aditya Seal. Student Of The Year 2 marked the Hindi big screen debut of Panday and Sutaria.
Shanaya Kapoor made her screen debut with the romantic drama Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, last year.
