Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran will headline Meghna Gulzar’s next feature, Daayra, a crime drama set to tackle some of society’s most unsettling truths. Backed by Junglee Pictures, the film is currently in pre-production.

Known for her work on Talvar, Raazi and Sam Bahadur, Gulzar returns to the crime genre with what she describes as a story that will “make us reflect on the society we live in and its institutions that pilot us.” The script is co-written with Sima and Yash, with an emphasis on “unravelling the greys within the black and white.”

This marks the first collaboration between Kapoor and Sukumaran—two actors from different cinematic traditions, coming together for a narrative the makers say taps into the "pulse of the people."

Kapoor, celebrating 25 years in Hindi cinema, said she was drawn to the film’s “bold, thought-provoking narrative.” “To be directed by Meghna is a dream come true,” she said. “Daayra promises to be a cinematic experience that challenges and inspires.”

Sukumaran, who recently made headlines for directing the Malayalam blockbuster L2: Empuraan, called the project “layered” and emotionally compelling. “When the script was narrated to me, I knew I had to do this,” he said.

Gulzar reunites with Junglee Pictures — her collaborators on Talvar and Raazi — for this new venture. Amrita Pandey, CEO of Junglee Pictures, said Daayra is in “the best possible hands,” crediting Gulzar’s “exceptional craft” and ability to blend substance with storytelling.

Plot details remain under wraps, but Daayra is expected to begin filming later this year.
