Extending the ongoing battle for Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has now said that it will not allow the release of Thug Life in Karnataka unless the actor issues a public apology for his language remark by May 30. This comes on the heels of Haasan's comment about Kannada being born out of Tamil, a remark he made while welcoming Kannada actor Shivarajkumar at the audio launch of the film last week.

KFCC chairman, M. Narasimhalu, told The Hindu in an interview that it was no longer about a film, but about an entire State. According to reports, the KFCC held a meeting with members of the Exhibitors’ Association of Karnataka and Distributors’ Association of Karnataka to discuss the issue. “The KFCC stands by the sentiments of the people of Karnataka. Mr. Haasan has to apologise in the next two days for a smooth release of Thug Life in Karnataka. The decision was taken with the backing of distributors and exhibitors along with former presidents of KFCC,” Narasimhalu was reported as saying.

Haasan recently said at a press gathering that he would apologise only if he is wrong. "My love for Karnataka is true... nobody will suspect it except those with an agenda. I've been threatened before. If I am not wrong, I'll not apologise. It is my lifestyle, please don't tamper with it."

Soon after the remark, the BJP and pro-Kannada groups threatened to ban the film, demanding an unconditional apology. The move comes even as Haasan recently clarified his remark at an event. “It was a statement of love to Mr Shivanna (Kannada star Shivarajkumar). His father (Dr Rajkumar) is like my father. We are a family, and so are the other languages.”

Meanwhile Shivarajkumar, at a recent event, added that Haasan holds Kannada in high regard. “He has only good things to tell about Bengaluru as well.... Kamal sir knows what he has said, and he will give an appropriate response," he said, according to reports. “Your love for Kannada shouldn’t be selective. It shouldn’t matter only when such a development happens. You must support young talents from the film industry. Nobody talks about newcomers. It’s not right to report only about big-star movies. As for me, I will give my life for Kannada,” he added.
