Kriti Sanon Says There Was 'Overdose of Action' and 'Death of Romance; On-Screen: 'We Were Scared'
At the Red Sea Film Festival 2025, the actor reflects on the fading age of macho spectacle, craving for deeper love stories, and why she wants to champion narratives rooted in Indian identity.
Actor Kriti Sanon has been watching the mood of the audience shift, and it fascinates her that the big screen, which was dominated by hyper-masculine action films, is also now witnessing intense romance.
“There has been almost an overdose of action in the past few years and almost a death of love stories. The max we were making were rom-coms. We were scared of going deep,” the actor, who currently stars in Tere Ishk Mein, tells THR India at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2025.
She wonders if that hesitation mirrors something cultural. “Is this generation scared to go for deep love? Do we not have conflicts anymore to find a love story?”, she asks. Yet beneath that uncertainty, she senses the desire for romantic films resurfacing. “Internally we all are craving for it. We are creating it in our lives and more so in cinema,” she says. The recent success of love stories makes her visibly happy. “I am so glad that they are doing well.”
When asked what kind of film she would manifest without the barriers of budget, language or markets, she says, “A female superhero coming from India. I would not say Avengers, but maybe our person who joins the army. It would be great to stick to our culture. Not trying to be someone else. Being very Indian at heart and still making us proud.”
This instinct for ownership over stories is linked to why she began producing. “It came from my heart,” she says. Acting alone was no longer enough. “I wanted to be involved in stories more than just being an actor. I wanted to support stories that I felt needed to be told.”
Her first impulse as a producer was toward a narrative she felt strongly about. “Domestic violence was something I really felt for and I felt for that story,” she says recalling the reason behind choosing Do Patti. Sanon is frank about where she stands. “There are aspects of producing that I may not know very well but I am willing to learn,” she says.
