The Malayalam and Tamil film actor has been granted interim protection from arrest by the Kerala High Court until 17 September, while three others remain in custody
Actor Lakshmi Menon has been booked in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of a 28-year-old IT professional in Kochi, police confirmed on Wednesday. Three of her co-accused — identified as Midhun, Aneesh and Sonamol — have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody, while the Kerala High Court has restrained police from arresting Menon until 17 September, according to a report in The Hindu.
The case stems from an incident on Sunday night (24 August), when a confrontation reportedly broke out between two groups at a bar in the city. According to the complaint lodged by the victim, Aliyarsha Salim of Aluva, he and his friends were later intercepted near Ernakulam North Bridge around 11.45pm. The assailants allegedly forced Salim out of his vehicle, assaulted him, and threatened him with death before abandoning him at the Aluva–Paravur junction.
Police registered the case on 25 August under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including kidnapping for ransom or coercion, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. While only Midhun’s name appears in the first information report, a senior Kochi City Police officer confirmed that he has been arraigned as the third accused, alongside Menon.
Local television channels on Wednesday broadcast footage purportedly showing Menon at the scene of the abduction. The actor, who has appeared in a string of Tamil and Malayalam films since her debut as a teenager, has denied wrongdoing and sought anticipatory bail. Her petition contended that the complainant had insulted her and co-accused Sonamol during the altercation, and that the case was filed to pre-empt their own arrest.
The arrests have intensified public scrutiny of the case, with the court’s interim order expected to provide temporary relief for Menon as the investigation continues. Police say further questioning and evidence-gathering are under way.
The high-profile involvement of a popular actor has placed the case firmly in the media spotlight, highlighting once again the intersection of celebrity, law enforcement and public perception in Kerala’s film industry.
