Dominic Arun’s Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is just ₹2 crore shy of becoming the first Malayalam film to touch the ₹300 crore mark at the global box-office. In late September, the film had become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, surpassing this year’s record set by L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj, starring Mohanlal. This record will also make Lokah the second highest-grossing female-led Indian movie, behind The Kerala Story.

Tracking website Sacnilk reported that the movie grossed a whopping ₹298 crore worldwide and is soon expected to enter the ₹300 crore club. Released on August 28, the film continues to draw packed audiences in theatres across Kerala, even a month after release. It has not yet been released on OTT, adding to its theatrical craze. Two other films that released this Onam, Hridayapoorvam and Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira, have both released on streaming.

In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan opened up about the overwhelming success of Lokah: Chapter 1 — Chandra, a film that has not only resonated with Malayalam audiences but has also broken barriers to become a pan-India cultural phenomenon. Reflecting on the project, Dulquer admitted the team had modest expectations. “This is our seventh production, and we've always managed to land safe. But nothing has been like Lokah,” he said. “Even as an actor, none of my films have exploded like this. It’s been accepted across demographics and has now become a part of pop culture. That’s what's most exciting.”

From day one, Lokah began receiving rave reviews from across the country. “I was seeing reactions from across India. It’s a testament to how audiences today are open to different languages and storytelling styles. People gave the film a chance on release day itself—watched it, reviewed it, made reels about it. It was surreal.”
