Though the two stars haven’t shared screen space together yet, several collaborations have been mooted in the past; Madhavan cheered on his friend Ajith Kumar at the Dubai 24H 2025 race last weekend
Fans of Tamil cinema were in for a surprise when they spotted actor-filmmaker R. Madhavan last weekend at the Dubai 24H 2025 race, cheering on his friend Ajith Kumar.
Madhavan posted updates from the race on social media, along with a picture of him and Ajith, congratulating the star and calling him “an incredible real hero.”
During an interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, while promoting his upcoming film Hisaab Barabar on ZEE5, Madhavan was all praise for Ajith and said that he was super excited that he got to support his friend during the race in Dubai.
“I knew Ajith well before Shalini got married to him, actually. I found him to be very generous and a guy right after my own heart, because he was technologically and completely engaged with everything he did. He was a remote flyer, a racer, he knew about bikes… all the passions that I had too!” grins Madhavan.
“It was very strange to find that sort of a connection in the Tamil industry, or actually in any industry as a matter of fact. So the connection was instant.”
Madhavan famously co-starred with Shalini Ajith Kumar in Mani Ratnam’s Alaipayuthey (2000), the same year she married Ajith. “Shalini was and continues to be madly in love with him, 20 years later. You know, she used to keep saying, she wishes Alaipayuthey was done by Ajith.. and I’d retort, going, ‘Yeah, well, I wish Sarita (Madhavan's wife) had been the heroine!’ (laughs) It really was the most romantic movie…” recalls Madhavan.
He adds that he has always been enamoured by the choices Ajith made: “Especially, the kind of distance he kept from everything. He also maintained a dignified silence about things when nothing had to be said, and was vocal only he had to speak out.”
“Also, he is the only superstar in the history of cinema who doesn't need to do publicity for his films. For me, that is just incredible. An Ajith Kumar film is announced, and just like that, it is sold. He doesn’t do any promotions for his movies, no interviews, nothing.. I don't think Hindi actors quite understand that. An Ajith film is announced, it is sold and it is seen. So I am in great awe of that,” Madhavan concludes.

Though the two stars haven’t shared screen space together yet, several collaborations have been mooted in the past; it remains to be seen if this friendship will translate onto the big screen sometime soon.
After the race, Ajith also thanked his fans and colleagues for their immense support and encouragement. His team, Ajith Kumar Racing secured third place in the '992 - Porsche 911 GT3' category of the event.
