Actor Navya Nair was penalised under strict biosecurity laws while visiting Melbourne for Onam festivities.
Malayalam actor Navya Nair’s visit to Melbourne for Onam celebrations took an unexpected turn when she was fined more than ₹1 lakh at the city’s airport.
Navya had travelled to Australia to participate in events organised by the Malayali Association of Victoria. During routine checks, airport officials discovered around 15 centimetres of jasmine flowers in her possession. Under Australia’s stringent biosecurity and customs regulations, importing fresh flowers and plant material is prohibited due to potential risks to agriculture and the environment.
As a result, the Australian Department of Agriculture imposed a penalty of 1,980 Australian dollars (approximately ₹1.14 lakh) on the actor. The country is known for some of the toughest biosecurity controls in the world, and even seemingly small violations can lead to steep fines.
Despite the hefty fine, Navya chose to laugh it off. She later shared a lighthearted video on social media, where she appears in a traditional Kerala sari with jasmine in her hair, casually documenting her airport meals, shopping, and journey. Set to the trending track Onam Mood, the reel poked fun at the incident and quickly caught the attention of her followers.
Her trip was part of a series of Onam events that drew the local Malayali community, where cultural programmes and traditional performances were planned across several days. The Malayali Association of Victoria had invited Navya as a guest for the festivities, and organisers said the actress had participated in a handful of functions before and after the airport episode.
Navya, who has been active in cinema for more than two decades, made her debut in 2001 with Ishtam. She soon gained recognition with acclaimed performances in films such as Mazhathullikkilukkam and Kunjikkoonan in 2002. Over the years, she has seamlessly worked across Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada cinema, earning praise for her versatility in both commercial entertainers and performance-driven roles.
