In Malayalam Cinema, It’s Re-Release Season Again With Mammootty’s ‘Samrajyam’ and Suresh Gopi-Jayaram’s ‘Summer In Bethlehem’
Notably, the last few re-releases in Malayalam did not perform too well.
After a short break, the season of Malayalam movie re-releases is back, with consecutive announcements of two older films returning to theatres. First up is the announcement of Mammootty’s cult gangster classic Samrajyam, which was directed by Jomon. Originally released in 1990, the film is making a comeback in 4K Dolby Atmos.
The makers released a poster with the caption, “He conquered once; he’ll conquer again. This September! Alexander Returns. Megastar Mammookka in Samrajyam 4K Dolby Atmos.”
The other high-profile re-release is Summer In Bethlehem, directed by Sibi Malayil and written by Ranjith, which first released in 1998. Apart from Jayaram and Suresh Gopi, the film also features Manju Warrier and Kalabhava Mani, not to mention the iconic cameo by Mohanlal. According to the announcement, the new version of the film will have 8K format upgrades.
It was earlier said that Kokers Films is planning a sequel of the 1998 film, but latest reports have hinted that a re-release would happen first.
As for Mammootty, the dark and intriguing poster of his next release Kalamkaval was also launched recently. “The Venom Beneath,” reads the film's caption.
In other news, apart from Mammootty’s Samrajyam, the working title of the upcoming Malayalam film MMMN (Mammootty-Mohanlal-Mahesh Narayanan) has been replaced with the title Patriot. This was confirmed by actor Mohanlal in an interview with a Sri Lankan channel. The island country is where the film is currently being shot. He also said that the film is massive, not just for its budget or scale but also in terms of its large star cast. Apart from stalwarts Mammootty and Mohanlal, the film’s cast includes Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara and Kunchacko Boban.
Patriot marks Mohanlal and Mammootty’s reunion in key roles after a gap of 17 years since Twenty:20 (2008). The shooting for the film began late last year.
