Nagarjuna, who was greeted with cheers at the 'Kuberaa' launch, gushed about how the north Indian audiences have always showered him with love, thanks to the Hindi-dubbed movies they have watched.
Telugu star Nagarjuna says he was itching to break the mould and not "repeat" himself when filmmaker Sekhar Kammula offered him his latest, Kuberaa. The actor, who co-stars in the film with Dhanush and Rashmika Mandanna, opened up about how he came on board the action-drama.
"I was wondering what to play next and not repeat myself," Nagarjuna said at the Mumbai launch of Kuberaa’s third single, 'Pippi Pippi Dum Dum Dum.'
"Sekhar Kammula, someone I’ve admired for 15 years, just walked in with this script. I didn’t ask anything—I said yes immediately," Nagarjuna added.
The actor, who was greeted with cheers and claps at the launch, gushed about how the north Indian audiences have always showered him with love, thanks to the Hindi-dubbed movies they have watched.
"Right from Shiva, Khuda Gawah, Criminal, Manam, to Oopiri—my films, even the dubbed ones, have been received so well across India,” Nagarjuna said, reflecting on his journey. "That love has kept me going, and Kuberaa felt like the right next step."
At the song launch, Nagarjuna also had warm words for all his co-stars, including Jim Sarbh. "He delivered Telugu dialogues better than me!" Nagarjuna teased.
Talking about Mandanna, the 65-year-old mentioned the actor's stellar run at the box office, from the Pushpa franchise to Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava. "None of us are ₹2,000–3,000 crore actors, but she makes it look effortless—she’s beaten all of us," Nagarjuna said.
Dhanush, who plays a beggar in the film and was also present at the launch, shared his preparation—or lack of it. "I did no research, no special homework. I just followed Sekhar. He taught me the nuances, slang that made my life very easy," said Dhanush, and recalled shooting at real dump yards and garbage trucks that helped him prep.
Kuberaa is set to release on June 20.
