“[Police brutality] is not justifiable, no matter what. We might make a film showing our protagonist [in that manner], but it is not justifiable,” said actor Nani, in an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter India. Ahead of the release of HIT: The Third Case, in which his character Arjun Sarkaar plays the role of a ruthless cop, the actor shared his thoughts on the upcoming action-drama.

S.J. Suryah’s role in Nani's previous outing Saripodhaa Sanivaaram (2024) was also that of a cold-blooded cop, but he was portrayed as a villain, while Nani’s character in HIT 3 is lauded as the hero. The actor, who was a part of both movies, was asked about when such on-screen acts of brutality by police officers would be justifiable.

Nani said that he believes it is "the cause" which is the differentiating factor, which was lacking in SJ Suryah's character; the latter's greed making him a villain.

He added that not only does HIT 3's Arjun Sarkaar have a purpose, but he also questions others about theirs, even when he meets a girl on a date. “He looks for purpose, so when he goes in a certain direction and wants to crack it, he will genuinely believe [the rest] to be collateral damage,” Nani explained. “He feels for the bigger purpose; it is okay to have that. We’re not justifying that… but he is that guy.”

The actor also revealed that there are episodes in the screenplay where this attitude of the lead protagonist is questioned in the film. The makers leave the morality of the act up to the audience to judge, but Nani noted that while some fans could be expected to have a problem with the character's decisions, they wouldn't have an issue with what he’s working towards.

Nani also underlined the theme of violence in HIT: The Third Case, adding, “The violence is extreme, compared to what we’ve seen in Telugu films.” Though he believes that it’s because of the genre, and not for the sake of it. “It starts off as an investigative thriller, but becomes an extraction kind of film. The stakes get higher and higher… but it is the massiest film in the HIT franchise.”

The full interview will be released on The Hollywood Reporter India's YouTube channel at 8pm today.
