Although Netflix renewed 'Kaala Paani' for a second season in 2023, just a month after its acclaimed debut, production on the new season will not move forward.
In November 2023, Netflix dropped an intriguing video announcing season two of its acclaimed show Kaala Paani. The clip featured its cast and recapped the events of the survival drama, with a bold promise: "Please wait for us, we will definitely meet you soon. A 100 %."
Two years later, the streaming giant has pulled the plug on the series.
Industry sources have told THR India that Sameer Saxena, executive producer, showrunner and director of Kaala Paani, was gearing up to mount the sequel on a bigger scale, but hit a roadblock as the show's budget was "humungous".
"There were budget issues that came up and couldn't be resolved despite several back-and-forth meetings. After multiple discussions, it was mutually decided that Kaala Paani 2 couldn’t move forward, keeping in mind various factors, the budget being one of them. The crew was prepping for pre-production, which was to begin in May, but they have now been informed of the cancellation," the source shared.
According to insiders, Netflix and PoshamPa Pictures, despite shelving Kaala Paani season two, have multiple projects in discussion, including season two of the breakout courtroom comedy series Maamla Legal Hai, which is currently on floors.
Kaala Paani featured a stellar cast including Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker, Amey Wagh, Sukant Goel, Vikas Kumar, Arushi Sharma, Radhika Mehrotra, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Poornima Indrajith, among others.
It was written by Biswapati Sarkar, Amit Golani, Sandeep Saket, Nimisha Misra, and directed by Saxena and Golani. The show chronicled people's fight for survival after a mysterious illness descends upon the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
