Stuntman Mohan Raj died while performing a car flip stunt on July 13; police book director Pa. Ranjith and three others under charges of negligence.
Tamil filmmaker Pa. Ranjith has been booked along with three members of his production team following the unfortunate death of stuntman Mohan Raj during a shoot for the upcoming film Vettuvam. The fatal accident occurred on July 13 during the filming of a car-flip stunt involving an SUV. Mohan, the stunt performer executing the sequence, was critically injured on impact and later succumbed to his injuries.
Pa Ranjith has expressed his condolences on X (formerly known as Twitter).
According to police reports, the scene required Mohan to drive the SUV up a ramp designed to flip the vehicle — a high-risk manoeuvre. Authorities initially filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Additional charges have now been added, naming director Pa Ranjith, Neelam Productions executive Rajkamal, stunt coordinator Vinoth, and vehicle owner Prabhakaran as co-accused.
The four individuals have been booked under Sections 106(1), 289, and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which collectively address causing death by negligence, negligent conduct with machinery, and acts endangering human life or personal safety. The maximum punishment under these sections ranges from fines to imprisonment of up to five years, depending on the severity and outcome of the incident.
The incident has reignited debates around safety practices on film sets, particularly involving stunt sequences. Industry veterans have voiced concern over the adequacy of on-set risk assessments and emergency preparedness during such high-stakes shoots.
Vettuvam, Pa Ranjith’s upcoming action drama, reunites him with actor Arya after the success of Sarpatta Parambarai in 2021. The first look of the film was unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, and a sequel to Sarpatta featuring Arya has also been announced.
No official comment has been issued by the director or the production house at the time of publishing. Investigations into the precise circumstances of the incident remain ongoing.
