The accident occurred during a high-risk car stunt in Tamil Nadu
Stunt coordinator and veteran action artist SM Raju tragically died during the filming of a high-risk sequence for actor Arya’s upcoming project, directed by Pa. Ranjith. The fatal accident took place on Sunday morning, July 13, in Tamil Nadu, while Raju was performing a car toppling stunt. He was reportedly executing a precision manoeuvre when the mishap occurred, and though immediate medical assistance was called, he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the Indian film industry, raising concerns about safety protocols during live-action stunts. SM Raju was a respected figure in Tamil cinema, known for his daring choreography and extensive body of work across mainstream films.
Actor Vishal, who had worked with Raju on multiple action-heavy projects, confirmed the news and paid tribute to the late stuntman on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “So difficult to digest the fact that stunt artist Raju passed away while doing a car toppling sequence,” he wrote. “He was such a brave person.” Vishal also pledged long-term support for Raju’s family, stating, “Not just this tweet — I will definitely be there for his family’s future. From the bottom of my heart and as my duty, I extend my support for them.”
The film Raju was working on is widely believed to be the sequel to Sarpatta Parambarai, Pa. Ranjith’s critically acclaimed 2021 sports drama. The sequel, which reunites the director with actor Arya, is slated for a 2026 theatrical release and has been generating considerable buzz since its announcement.
While production is expected to pause following the incident, no official statement has been released by the makers. Industry peers and stunt professionals have called for greater oversight and reinforced safety standards on sets.
As tributes continue to pour in, SM Raju is remembered as a fearless craftsman whose work elevated action cinema in the south.
