Pa Ranjith's upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam recently got an intense introduction, with a teaser that takes audiences through the film's core essence and offers glimpses of some of its main characters.
The film will speak about the past, present, the effects of nature's destruction in the future, and a central land conflict, explains Pa Ranjith's voiceover, as we're taken through the world of Vettuvam through behind-the-scenes glimpses of actors Arya, Dinesh, Sobhita Dhulipala, Shabeer, and Kalaiyarasan, rigorously training in the ancient pole sport of Mallakhamba.
"A competition will unfold in the film. Whoever emerges victorious in this sport, will be assigned a powerful position. Who will come out as the winner? Will all of the destruction begin a new way of life? That's what Vettuvam will be about," he says, also explaining how every actor in the film trained in the self-defence sport intensely.
The film, which will also co-star Mime Gopi, Guru Somasundaram, Shabeer Kallarakkal, John Vijay, Sai Dheena, Anand Saami, Harish Uthaman, Lizzy, Lingesh Prem Kumar, Kavitha Bharathi, Arjun, Santha Kumar, Melody, Manisha, Nimmy, Raphael, Vikram, Naveen, and Prakash, will have music by GV Prakash Kumar.
Co-written by Santhosh Narayanan Chenthilkumar, the film is produced by Ranjith's Neelam Productions, and will have camerawork by Roopesh Shaji.
One of the leading directors of new age Tamil cinema, Pa. Ranjith is known for films like Kaala and Sarpatta Parambarai. His last directorial was the historical action drama Thangalaan, starring Vikram.
Speaking about Vettuvam, the filmmaker had earlier said the project was nearing completion. "The film has turned out really well,” Ranjith was quoted as saying. “I have built a new world in this film, and I hope the audience will like it. The film is packed with action and adventure. I have made this film as a blend of action and sci-fi, and I have high hopes that it will connect with the audience. We are planning to give viewers a completely new experience.”
The film is aiming for a 2026 release in the theatres.
