Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for his role as the noble warrior Karna in BR Chopra’s 1988 television epic Mahabharat, died in Mumbai on 15 October. He was 65. The actor had been undergoing treatment for cancer, which relapsed a few months ago despite major surgery.

The news was confirmed by actor and CINTAA member Amit Behl, who described Dheer as a “deeply respected and much-loved colleague”. The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) issued a statement mourning his loss, saying:
“With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA's former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 pm, next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.”

Dheer’s portrayal of Karna remains one of the most enduring performances in Indian television. His dignified screen presence and nuanced understanding of the tragic hero earned him widespread admiration — a role that followed him for the rest of his career. “People have loved me and adored me over the years,” he once said. “Even in the history books of schools, if they have a reference to Karna, they have my picture there. So, as long as these books are printed in school, I will always be their reference as Karna.”

Across his four-decade career, Dheer appeared in several Hindi films, including Sanam Bewafa, Baadshah and Saugandh, and television serials such as Chandrakanta and Sasural Simar Ka. He also directed the 2014 film My Father Godfather and founded the Abhinay Acting Academy in Mumbai to train young performers.

Dheer once reflected on the deep cultural connection his portrayal inspired: “I also have two temples where there is Puja done every day. I am worshipped there in Karna Mandir… This goes to show that they have accepted me as Karna.”

He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and son, actor Nikitin Dheer.
