Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa's 'Phule' was pushed from its April 11 release after Brahmin organisations alleged the film showed their community in a negative light.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has asked the makers of Phule, based on the life of anti-caste reformers Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, to drop several caste references from the film following objections by Brahmin community associations.
The Ananth Mahadevan directorial, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in the lead roles, was initially scheduled to be released on the big screen on April 11, which coincides with Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s birth anniversary.
However, the biopic's release was pushed after several Brahmin organisations objected to their representation in the film. One of the Brahmin groups had alleged that the film promotes casteism and claimed it shows the community in a poor light.
Now, the CBFC has directed the makers to remove terms such as 'Mahar', 'Mang', 'Peshvai' and 'Manu's system of caste' which are considered 'sensitive', as per reports. Even before the list of cuts by the CBFC was reported, the makers had decided to push the film and announced the same on April 8.

According to the makers, the film offers a glimpse into the relentless struggle of the reformers as they attempted to change the "status quo of women, particularly widows and Dalits in the contemporary Maharashtrian patriarchal society."
Reflecting on his role, Pratik had earlier shared that he was "fortunate" to live the life of Jyotiba Phule on -creen. "I could feel the immense struggle and opposition that he endured as he along with his wife, dismantled an age-old societal system designed to oppress those at the lowest rungs of the social hierarchy," the actor had shared in a statement.
Produced by Dancing Shiva Films, and Kingsmen Productions, Phule is now eyeing an April 25 release.
