Malayalam star Unni Mukundan has revealed that his plans of making a sequel to his blockbuster action film Marco have been dropped.

The actor shared a video on his social media over the weekend showcasing his transformation, to which a fan commented, asking “Marco 2kab ayegi?” (When will Marco 2 release?).

Unni replied, saying, “Bro, apologies but I have dropped plans to continue the Marco series. Too much negativity around the project. I’ll try my best to bring something bigger and better than Marco. Thanks for all the love and positivity. Cheers."

Despite its success at the box-office, Marco attracted criticism for its portrayal of violence and became a controversial talking point in the south Indian film industry.

After its release, the film was denied a television release by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has cited excessive violence as the reason behind its decision. While the Malayalam film remains available on Sony LIV, a CBFC official has reportedly sought intervention from the Centre to remove it from OTT platforms as well.

Marco follows the story of a gangster who goes on a bloody rampage, leading to intense action sequences throughout the film. Directed by Haneef Adeni, it was initially granted an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certification for its theatrical release, and the film’s makers had sought a reclassification to ‘UA’ or ‘U’ for television broadcast by making necessary cuts.

CBFC Regional Officer Nadeem Thufali had stated that Marco remains inappropriate for television despite edits, reinforcing the board’s limited role in certification rather than censorship. He added that parents should be cautious when exposing children to such films, in an interview with Manorama News.

Meanwhile, fans are still awaiting Unni Mukundan's next project. Earlier this year, Vipin Kumar, who claims to have worked with actor Unni Mukundan for a period of six years, called on the media to reveal how he was attacked and abused by Unni, allegedly for posting a positive note about actor Tovino Thomas’ new film Narivetta.

Mukundan’s most recent film Get Set Baby did not perform well at the theatres and Vipin Kumar also alleged that Mukundan’s proposed directorial, said to be bankrolled by Gokulam Pictures, has also hit a roadblock. He added, “He (Unni Mukundan) is someone who takes out all his frustrations on people around him. Everyone who worked with him has now deserted him. I cannot be the only person willing to listen to his taunts.”

Mukundan, however, responded to these allegations in a statement to Manorama Online. The actor denied assaulting Vipin, and added that he clarified the entire incident with Tovino. “Vipin has taken actions that seem intended to tarnish my reputation. It's impossible to explain the shock and pain when someone you've been close to for years suddenly turns against you," he said.

He further added that the accusation was propaganda meant to harm both him and Tovino. "I personally called Tovino and explained everything; he understood the situation. We've been friends since we entered the industry and share a strong bond."
