In its most high-profile foray into unscripted programming to date, Prime Video India announced on Thursday that it will premiere the Indian adaptation of The Traitors, a globally successful reality competition series, on June 12. The series will be hosted by filmmaker and television personality Karan Johar.

Produced by BBC Studios India in association with All3Media International, the Indian edition of The Traitors is based on the original Dutch format created by IDTV, which has found significant success internationally. Since its debut in 2021, the psychological reality series has been adapted in over 30 countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and has garnered both critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

In The Traitors, a group of 20 celebrity participants will inhabit a shared location and engage in a social strategy game centered on deception, trust, and elimination. Among them are a few secretly designated “traitors,” tasked with covertly sabotaging the group’s efforts to win a large cash prize. The rest, the “faithful,” must identify and eliminate the traitors before they are picked off themselves.

The Traitors promises immersive entertainment and next-level mind games that are sure to captivate our wide gamut of audiences,” said Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India, in a statement. “Packed with drama, manipulation, suspenseful gameplay, and unexpected twists, the show is mounted on a grand scale with high production values.”

The announcement was teased with an outdoor campaign and a dramatic video featuring Johar himself, looking every bit the mansion maestro about to unleash psychological warfare on an unsuspecting celebrity clique. If the Instagram teaser is anything to go by, the vibes are luxe, the stakes are lethal, and someone’s definitely crying in couture.
