Radhika Apte to Direct Her First Feature Film ‘Kotya’

Backed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the action-fantasy follows a young migrant worker who gains superpowers after a forced medical procedure.

Actor Radhika Apte is set to helm her debut feature film, Kotya, alongside producer Vikramaditya Motwane. The film was unveiled as part of the CinéV-CHD market lineup at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF), among 22 others, most of which were women-oriented.

"The Hindi/Marathi action-fantasy follows a young migrant sugarcane cutter who gains superpowers after a forced medical procedure and uses them to free her family from debt," reads a report by Variety.

The CIFF lineup also features a multilingual Punjabi, Urdu and Kashmiri film supported by filmmaker Hansal Mehta, an English-Hindi project directed and produced by Nandita Das, and a Malayalam drama co-produced by Kani Kusruti.

Apte is not new to the director's chair. She previously wrote and directed a short film called The Sleepwalkers back in 2020. The film, starring Gulshan Devaiah and Shahana Goswami, was a candidate at the Palm Springs International ShortFest 2020 in the Best Midnight Short category.

Recognised for her versatility, the actor was last seen in the black comedy Sister Midnight, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. She is also scheduled to appear in Netflix's upcoming period-thriller series Akka, alongside Keerthy Suresh.

Apte's filmography includes a variety of Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and English films, from Badlapur (2015), Hunterrr (2015) and Andhadhun (2018) to Netflix projects like Lust Stories (2018), Ghoul (2018) and Sacred Games (2018).
