The actor-filmmaker reflects on the surprise box-office sweep of 'Su From So', and what is needed for the Kannada film industry
Su From So, a small Kannada film rooted in the heart of Dakshina Kannada, has pulled off what few expected—grossing over ₹17.3 crore at the Karnataka box office within just five days; the film has left no one more surprised or grateful than Raj B. Shetty.
Directed by debutant J.P. Thuminad and produced under the Lighter Buddha Films banner by Shashidhar Shetty Baroda, Ravi Rai Kalasa, and Shetty himself, Su From So has quickly cemented its place as one of the biggest Kannada hits of the year.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India in the wake of the film’s soaring success, Shetty opened up about the evolving landscape of Kannada cinema and the urgent need for homegrown films that the audience appreciates. “We need Kannada films that will pull people to the theatres,” he said, indicating that the industry hasn’t had the smoothest run this year.
He recalls the initial hesitation from distributors. “They told me clearly; don’t release it on the 25th, there are bigger films from other languages coming out. But I told them I’ll try. For me, the first week was a trial,” Shetty shared.
That trial quickly transformed into momentum. “The first day we had 70 shows in Bangalore. Second day? 180. By the third day, we hit 340 shows. On Sunday, they started opening 6 PM shows because they just couldn’t accommodate any more demand. Now Su From So is one of the biggest films in Bengaluru.”
And the numbers speak for themselves. “On a Monday, it sold one lakh tickets, just in booking. That’s too big for the Kannada market,” Shetty said, still stunned. “I didn’t think people wouldn’t show up, I just thought it might take time. But this is something else.”
He is humble about the film’s place in the cinematic landscape, stating, “I don’t consider this a flawless film, no film is. But it’s a commercial film with its own sensibility. And that’s something we really need in Karnataka right now.”
For Shetty, the success of Su From So reaffirms the power of backing stories that feel rooted, real, and worthy of the big screen. “I'm just so glad. It can only happen in films actually, but it’s happening to this film.”
