In a new development, the producers of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie have approached the Madras High Court challenging the ‘A’ certificate granted to the Rajinikanth-starrer. Sun TV Network Limited has filed a civil appeal against the CBFC’s decision, in hopes of making the film accessible to viewers below the age of 18, according to a report in The Hindu.

While the Madras High Court’s registry had initially doubted the maintainability of the appeal, it has now been listed for admission before the court.

Directed and co-written by Kanagaraj, Coolie is an action drama headlined by Rajinikanth and co-starring Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Aamir Khan and others. The CBFC had passed the film with an ‘A’ certificate owing to its violent imagery, making it Lokesh’s first adults-only film. The decision was held up by the censor board’s revising committee.

Consequently, multiplex chains like PVR INOX and AGS Cinemas mandated a valid proof of age for the film’s screening, limiting its audience reach. Since the film had to be released on August 14, the makers decided to accept the certification and challenge it later via legal channels, the report stated.

Celebrating 50 years of Rajinikanth in cinema, Coolie scored a phenomenal opening of over ₹151 crore at the global box-office, setting a record for the highest day-one grosser for a Tamil film. The film has crossed the ₹400 crore mark worldwide in six days. The action crime-drama narrates the story of a former smuggler investigating the death of an old friend, eventually clashing with a ruthless mobster.

In its review of Coolie, The Hollywood Reporter India said, “Lokesh used to be able to organically create whistle-worthy moments without ever compromising on plot, but with Coolie he pads up a tired plot with so many twists, sub-plots and characters that you feel stuck in a convoluted web of lies in which everything stops making sense.”
