Director Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of The Ramayana has been now reported to be officially India’s most expensive film to date, with the budget crossing ₹4,000 crore across two parts.

Producer Namit Malhotra has revealed that the film is being made at a cost of around $500 million.

Malhotra said, “No Indian film, by a long distance, comes close to it... We’re making the largest film in the world for the greatest story, the greatest epic, that the world should see. But despite the budget, the production remains financially responsible compared to the costs of equivalent Hollywood blockbusters."

Ramayana will be released in two parts, with the first slotted for Diwali 2026 and the second for Diwali 2027. The adaptation will star Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravan, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman as the main cast members.

The film will get a grand IMAX release, and will feature AI dubbing technology for seamless regional language viewing, which is a first in Indian cinema, according to reports.

In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Malhotra had said, "With Ramayana, it has taken 30 years of experience to reach a place where we can execute it at this scale. We’ve worked on global projects, won awards, and built a solid foundation. Now, we’re applying everything we’ve learned to make Ramayana as grand and immersive as possible."

He added that Ramayana belongs to the world: "No one person or entity owns it. That’s what makes it so powerful. Since everyone has their own interpretation, the challenge is to tell the story in a way that feels familiar yet visually groundbreaking."

"When you read the Ramayana, you don’t get to see its full scale—the epic landscapes, creatures, and characters. We are leveraging everything we’ve learned, all the technology and artistry at our disposal, to bring it to life in the grandest way possible. I often say that after 30 years in the industry, I finally feel ready to make Ramayana because we now have the expertise, experience, and technology to do it justice."

The launch of the film’s first motion poster featured animated glimpses of Ranbir and Yash’s characters, and audiences were also treated to parts of the original score by Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.
