Ravi Varman Joins American Society of Cinematographers; Becomes Only Second Indian to Receive Honour

National Award-winning cinematographer Ravi Varman has been invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), making him only the second Indian cinematographer to receive this prestigious recognition after Santosh Sivan.

The ASC, the world’s leading organisation for cinematographers, is known for its rigorous selection process. Its board, consisting of acclaimed cinematographers, including Oscar winners, meticulously reviews the body of work of potential inductees before conferring the honour. Varman’s inclusion underscores his exceptional contribution to the art of visual storytelling.

Expressing his gratitude, the cinematographer shared, "I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the board of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) for inducting me as a member. Cinematographers from all over the world dream of joining this association. It gives me great joy and pride to be included in a platform where the world's leading cinematographers who have won awards including Oscars are members. I wholeheartedly thank those who made me realise this dream.”

Ravi Varman joins the American Society of Cinematographers

Varman, also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) since 2024, is renowned for his unique visual style. With a career spanning over 25 years, Varman has built a distinguished portfolio across Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English films.

He has collaborated with some of the most celebrated filmmakers in Indian cinema, including Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, Anurag Basu, and Imtiaz Ali, as well as American director Dune Adler. Some of his most popular films include the Ponniyin Selvan duology, Dasavatharam, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Barfi!, Sanju, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, and Tamasha.
