Actor Suriya's latest big screen outing, Retro, has entered the ₹100-crore club. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the Tamil actioner has grossed ₹104 crores at the worldwide box office.
The makers of the film announced the update on X and wrote, "A ‘ONE’ hundred crore LOVE at the Box Office for #TheOne's show," the tweet read, referring to Suriya's character Pari being "the promised one" in the film.
The Tamil film opened to a ₹19.25 crore all-India nett on May 1, competing alongside other titles such as Nani's Telugu thriller Hit: The Third Case, and Ajay Devgn's Raid 2.
Retro, co-starring Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj, explored the lives of menacing gangster Pari (Suriya) and his star-crossed lover Rukmini (Hegde).
The film had music by Santhosh Narayanan and camerawork by Shreyaas Krishna. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the filmmaker spoke about staging an important moment around the single-take Kanimaa sequence, which wasn’t originally meant to be a one-take.
"It was just supposed to be a wedding reception song, where the dad and gang dance along with Pari, pretending like everything was normal. And after the song, when people would get ready for the next day, he’d call Pari for a drink and have the confrontation. That’s how the initial draft went. But as I started writing many drafts, I realised all the ideas had a wild edge. So I thought why not go full on," the filmmaker said.
The single-shot technique turned out to be a good choice to sustain the film’s wild quality, the filmmaker noted. “I wanted to make sure people were entertained while watching it. I wanted the craziness to be maintained. My team also felt it was a good challenge to take on, and the song was planned as such. I told Santhosh to give me a five-minute song, but told him to make sure that I could break the song so that the hero walks away and comes back.”
Subbaraj's last film was Jigarthanda DoubleX (2024), an action film that doubled up as an ode to the power of filmmaking. The film co-starred Lawrence, SJ Suriyah, and Nimisha Sajayan.
