Legendary actor, filmmaker and founder of the Sundance Film Festival Robert Redford passed away at 89 on Wednesday, September 16. From India, film personalities like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Anurag Kashyap and others paid tribute to the Hollywood icon.
On Instagram, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared a quote by Redford on the power of storytelling, writing “In Power Legend.” Priyanka Chopra Jonas posted a photo of Redford with the caption “Icon.” Anil Kapoor wrote on X, “Rest in peace, Robert Redford. From Barefoot in the Park to The Great Gatsby, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and all the films in between—he was one of the most beautiful, captivating men ever. His personality, that legendary jawline, that smile… beyond compare."

Redford, a dashing, visionary icon of American film, leaves behind an enduring legacy. His landmark films include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), The Way We Were (1973), and All the President’s Men (1976). As a director, Redford won the Academy Award for Best Director for his debut work, Ordinary People (1980). His subsequent films included A River Runs Through It (1992), Quiz Show (1994), The Horse Whisperer (1998), The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), Lions for Lambs (2007), The Conspirator (2010) and The Company You Keep (2012). In 1980, Redford founded the Sundance Institute, which blossomed into the Sundance Film Festival, a leading platform for independent cinema. He was also known for his philanthropy and environmental activism.
Redford received an Honorary Oscar in 2002. He continued acting in films in his late life, with well-regarded turns in All Is Lost (2013), Our Souls at Night (2017) and The Old Man & the Gun (2018).
Rerford's death was confirmed in a statement by his publicist Cindi Berger. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly,” Berger told CNN in a statement. “The family requests privacy.”
