Saif Ali Khan Assault Case: Accused Sent To Five-Day Police Custody; Actor Remains Under Observation
Saif Ali Khan, 54, suffered six stab injuries, including two deep wounds near his spine, during an attempted burglary at his Bandra residence last week.
The Mumbai police on Sunday arrested the accused from Thane in the case of actor Saif Ali Khan’s stabbing at his Bandra residence last week. The man, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad, 30, is suspected to be a Bangladeshi national. He has been sent to police custody till January 24.
Meanwhile, Khan will remain under observation at the Lilavati Hospital. According to hospital sources, the 54-year-old actor won't be getting a discharge on Monday, as was speculated earlier. "He will be kept under observation for one more day," sources said.
Initial evidence suggested that Shehzad, who worked with a housekeeping agency in Thane, had entered Khan's home with the intention of theft.
Police officials claim that Shehzad will now be taken to the actor's Satguru Sharan building in Bandra, where Khan lives with his actor-wife Kareena Kapoor and their two kids, to recreate the crime scene.
On January 16, around 2 am, an intruder entered Khan's 12th-floor apartment when the family was asleep. According to reports, the attacker entered the room of Khan's younger son, Jeh, when a staff member confronted him.
Hearing the commotion, Khan intervened, leading to a scuffle during which the actor suffered six stab injuries, including two deep wounds near the spine. Accompanied by his son Taimur and a staff member, Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in an autorickshaw.
Dr Niraj Uttamani, the neurosurgeon who operated on Khan, later revealed how the actor was "drenched in blood" when he reached the hospital. "But he walked in like a lion with his small child, Taimur. Saif Ali Khan is a real hero," Uttamani said.
The actor underwent emergency surgery to address his injuries, which included a knife lodged in his thoracic spinal cord and leakage of spinal fluid. Recuperating from his injuries, Khan is expected to be discharged soon.
