Shruti Haasan was a bundle of nerves on her first day on the sets of Coolie. In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Haasan revealed that, in her very first scene with Rajinikanth in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film, she was required to ‘yell’ at the Superstar, a task that naturally left her feeling a bit intimidated.

Directed and co-written by Kanagaraj, Coolie is a sprawling action drama starring Rajinikanth as Deva, a former smuggler investigating the death of an old friend, eventually clashing with a ruthless crime boss (Nagarjuna). In the film, Haasan essays the role of the deceased friend's daughter, Preethi. This is the first time the actor-singer shared screen space with Rajinikanth.

“I said, ‘do you have to start with me yelling at sir’?" Haasan shared, speaking about the funeral scene in Coolie. The only way she could ground myself, then, is by focusing on the job hand. "kaam karo, kaam karo (do your work, do your work),” she told herself.

However, she wasn't so unnerved while delivering a long and impactful monologue about the role of money and her character's hardships opposite the Superstar in the film. "The image people have of me is that she has everything. I never take that for granted but I know that I paid my own bills for so many years. Money means different things to different people. To some, it's power. To some, it is one meal a day. And to some independent women, it's the freedom to live a life. That aspect of the monologue is something I really liked."

Released in theatres on August 14, Coolie scored a phenomenal opening of over ₹151 crore at the global box-office, setting a record for the highest day-one grosser for a Tamil film. As of Sunday, the film has netted an estimated ₹193.25 crore in India.

In addition to Rajinikanth, Haasan and Nagarjuna, the film also features Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir and Bollywood star Aamir Khan (in a special appearance).

Speaking about her experience working with the Superstar, who celebrates 50 years in Indian film, Shruti Haasan had previously told The Hollywood Reporter India, “I never really got to know Rajinikanth sir at all before, contrary to belief. I had no real interaction with him except for cordial formalities. He was really encouraging. If I did something in a scene that he liked, he'd go out of his way to appreciate it. All artistes need motivation, and when it comes from someone so legendary, it makes all the difference in the world.”
